Evictions do not necessarily show up on your credit report, but they affect your life for a long time in two ways. It is probably one of the worst things you can have affecting your future, as it leads to denied applications for most apartments and higher rates for interest in many loans. Even if you can work things out with a landlord after an eviction, it can still have disasterous effects. An eviction is what gets filed in court. This leads to two more actions: 1. a report to private tenant scanning companies and 2. a money judgement that gets reported to credit agencies for a period of at least 7 years. The good news is that you may be able to get the judgement removed from your credit report, but the tenant reporting service may keep your eviction record on for much longer and this is what many landlords go by. The best time to fight an eviction is before it happens. Otherwise, find a really good attorney to explore all of your legal options.
